The Devils vs. Tigers game was the first time in school history that ASU asked fans to wear black. The game also marked the first time the football team wore their new all black uniforms.
The transformation created a buzz not only among players but also the fans. More than 70,000 seats were filled inside Sun Devil Stadium to watch ASU make history in their new black uniforms.
This was ASU’s first win against a ranked team since the 2007 season. The game was personally enjoyable for me because my brother Aaron Pflugrad had his career high by catching eight passes for 180 yards and two touchdowns.
The amp of the Black Out started when Arizona State University teamed up with Nike and unveiled their brand new uniforms and new logo this April. The change marked a new look, a new year and a new season for its athletes. Even the memorable Sparky on the football helmets was replaced with a pitchfork, whose three prongs, according to ASU athletics vice president Lisa Love, represent the “integrity, scholarship and winning tradition” of Sun Devil athletics.
With the final score of 37-30 in favor of the Devils, I’d say the black uniforms have definitely got the Devils off to a great start. The new pitchfork may have started a new winning tradition.
